Modakkurichi police arrested 40 people, including 38 North Indian workers and two boys for indulging in violence in the SKM edible oil firm at Nanjai Uthukuli, near Erode, on Thursday following a north Indian worker
Kamathram of Bihar was killed when he was loading some goods in a lorry and the lorry driver drove the vehicle in reverse direction.
Other workers demanded Rs 12.75 lakh compensation to his family.
When police held talks with the workers, violence erupted and the workers ransacked the office of the firm, damaged 5 police jeeps and attacked cops in which 8 cops injured.
On hearing, the DIG Muthusamy visited the spot and injured in the hospital.
The police registered cases under Section 147 (illegal addition), Section 148 (possession of a weapon), Section 294 (b), obscenity, section 323 (assault), section 324 (causing serious injury), section 307 (attempted murder), section 353 (civil servants).
The police also filed a case under Section 112 (obstruction of duty), Section 332 (assault and obstruction of civil servants), and damage to public property.
The 38 North Indian workers lodged in Coimbatore central prison and two boys were sent to juvenile home.
Six of the seven policemen injured in the attack by northern workers have recovered.
Only one person continues to receive treatment.
