Four construction workers were killed in a lightning strike in Virudhunagar last evening. 2 people were injured. A new house owned by Sathish Kumar is under construction at Karuppasamy Nagar in Virudhunagar. Work on setting up a water tank on the top floor of the house took place yesterday in which 6 construction workers were employed. Heavy thunder and lightning struck last night.
Jakkammal (55), Murugan (24), Karthik Raja (28) and Jayasuriya (22) from Rosalpatti who were engaged in construction work died on the spot due to the sudden lightning strike. Sangili (36) and Mahendran (38) were injured. Upon receiving the information, the fire brigade recovered the bodies of the four victims and sent them to Virudhunagar Government Hospital for autopsy. Both of the injured have been recovered and admitted for treatment.
It is noteworthy that the deceased Murugan and Karthik Raja were both cousins. Pandian Nagar police are investigating the accident. The district SP personally visited and inspected the scene of the accident.
Chief Minister Stalin condoled the death of the workers and offered his consolation to the families of the victims of the accident. The Chief Minister has also ordered the immediate release of Rs 2 lakh each from the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund to the families of the victims
