A day after a 30-year-old fisherman from Mayiladuthurai was injured after he was fired at by the Indian Navy’s patrolling team in mid-sea near Palk Bay, Vedaranyam marine police officials have booked a case against the patrolling team. A case under four sections including attempt to murder, was slapped against the patrolling team of the Navy based on a complaint filed by the owner of the fishing boat.
According to officials, a fishing boat with ten people was found near Kodiyakarai by the patrolling team of the Indian Navy. On suspicion, the team had directed them to stop sailing the boat. But the fishermen had not paid heed to their directions as it was raining heavily in that region. Subsequently, the patrolling team had fired multiple warning shots at them. During which, one of the fishermen Veeravel had sustained shot injuries on his leg and stomach.
Shortly, the patrolling team which understood the situation, gave first-aid treatment to the injured before informing INS Parundu who in turn deployed a rescue chopper to the site to rescue the injured fishermen.
He was taken to Parundu where first-aid was given to him before taking him to Ramanathapuram government hospital for treatment. He was later referred to Government Rajaji hospital in Madurai for treatment.
A day later, Vedaranya marine police officials have booked a case against the officials involved in the patrolling team under four sections including attempt to murder.
Meanwhile, the fishermen in the boat alleged that they were tortured by the Indian Navy and many of them were beaten by the officials with an iron rod. Political leaders including PMK founder Dr Ramadoss and Naam
Thamizhar Katchi’s Seeman had condemned the action of the Indian Navy.
