After almost 40 years, passenger shipping service was started from Nagai port to Sri Lanka Gangesan sector. A 150-passenger ship named Cheriyapani was brought from Cochin for this purpose. Only 50 people travelled to Sri Lanka on the first day. The next day it was informed that only 7 passengers had booked the ferry service and that it would be operated only three days a week namely Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Following this, only 15 persons travelled to Sri Lanka on the 16th. Fewer passengers went to Sri Lanka on 18th and 20th.
Following this, service was cancelled and the ship left Nagai for Cochin on 23rd. Only 4 times in total, the ship visited Sri Lanka. Social activists have alleged that due to lack of proper planning by the Union government, the cruise has not been well received by the passengers.
Shipping from Nagai to Sri Lanka is truly welcome. It has many uses. Tourism in Tamil Nadu will improve especially through shipping. The relationship between fishermen of both countries will be strengthened.
But due to the lack of proper planning by the Union Government, this cruise has not been well received by the passengers.
Specifically, it was announced that the ship would depart at 9 am. For this, you have to reach the port at 4.30 in the morning. Passengers cannot have breakfast.
Only snacks were served on the ship. So the passengers demanded that the departure time should be changed to 11 am. The port authorities did not take notice of it.
And the fee is fixed at Rs.4,500 which is a subsidized and reduced fees. A passport office should be opened in Nagai.
Currently pasengers have to go to Tanjore to get the passport. Nagai port should be developed. It has been announced that traffic will resume in January.Shipping has been temporarily cancelled due to the rainy season.
It is true that only if these defects are rectified at the time of its commencement, shipping service will be welcomed by passengers!
