The government invited applications from ryots and people to take soil and clay free of cost from public ponds.
In a release, District Collector H. Krishnanunni said according to the amendment in the Tamil Nadu Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1959, made on 24-4-2017, the government has directed officials to prepare a list of ponds under the maintenance of Public Works Department and Rural Development Department, ponds which are eligible for excavation of alluvial soil, clay soil and gravel and send the proposals of such ponds to the Collector for publication in the district gazette.
Accordingly, permission will be granted to farmers under Rule 12 (2) of the Tamil Nadu Minor Minerals Concession Rules, subject to conditions for the excavation of alluvial soils and clay soils for agriculture, pottery and personal use.
Permission will be granted to take soil and clay only from 7 am to 5 pm in areas defined by the relevant Department. When taking soil, the public should not damage the trees, banks and structures in the pond.
Soil should be taken only in the absence of water in the pond. The excavated soil should be used for agricultural purposes only and should not be sold. Farmers and public are advised to submit the application to take the soil or clay to the Tahsildars concerned along with the relevant documents and take the soil only in the quantity allotted to them after getting permission.
