Book on Yercaud history and culture released

The 100 th.book of YercaudIlango, “ YercaudVaralarumPannpadum (History and Culture of Yercaud) was released on January 6, 2023.  Published by ThamizharPathipagam, the three volume book has 22 chapters and 1244 pages. The book extensive cover a whole sweep of topics beginning with the very orgins of Yercaud hills, its floral and faunal diversity. 

It traces the orgins of human civilization beginning from the new stone agepresenting evidences of stone age implements dating to 6000 B.C  found in more than 50 villages.
He also documents several types of cairns, stone henges, herostones, pottery, stone pillars, ancient stone architecture found in Yercaud which date back to 2500 years. Information on stone inscriptions (Veerakkal and Gomarikal) are also mentioned extensively in the book.

The author elaborates about the tribal people’s history, their marriage customs, rituals, temple festivities, songs, performing folk arts like kummi community dancing, grain storage practices and several information on cultural life of the natives. 

The arrival of Europeans to the Yercaud hills and establishment of coffee plantations and planting of exotic varieties of fruits, vegitables and decorative trees and plants have been covered with interesting information.The book has a wealth of information on the natural and man-made beauty spots of Yercaud. 

In a chapter on Tourist Spots Yesterday and Today he writesabout the existence of 80 tourists spots that were visited during the British period. The book release function was presided by Dr.SampsonRavindran, Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Educational Institutons. Prof.Dr.T.Thirunavukarasu gave the welcome address. P.Sahasaranamam, Palam Book Readers’ Forum gave a review of the book.
