Boom in textile trade due to Ramzan

Textile sales in the Erode market were overwhelming due to Ramzan festival on May 2. The weekly shandy in Erode Gani Textile Market is held on Tuesdays.  Meanwhile, the textile trade has been in a slump for the past few weeks after the Pongal festival due to rising yarn prices.  In this situation, the sales in the textile market picked up on the eve of Ramzan.


Large numbers of wholesalers, especially from outstations like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, came to the market to buy textiles.  Similarly, retail sales were overwhelming. The textile traders said  wholesale and retail trade in the market was booming this week in the run-up to Ramzan.  Wholesalers had arrived from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh yesterday after several weeks.  Sarees, Vettis, Lungis, lace embroideries cloth were sold in large quantities.


Merchants from other districts of Tamil Nadu also came up in large numbers.  The attendance of the local public was also higher than usual.  Total sales accounted for more than 40 per cent and retail accounted for 60 per cent, they said.
