Call taxi drivers went on strike yesterday in Erode district demanding a hike in rent. The cars were lined up on the 80-foot road in Periyar Nagar.
Drivers said, “Petrol and diesel prices have gone up. The price of auto parts has also gone up. But, the private Call Taxi companies charges a rent that was already fixed.
At present Rs.95 is the rent for a distance of 3 km. It should be hiked to Rs. 115. Similarly Call Taxi drivers are required accident insurance on behalf of the companies.'' There are 400 taxis in the district. About 100 drivers struck work.
