Coimbatore range deputy inspector general of police C Vijayakumar shot himself dead with a pistol on Friday at his camp office in Race Course in the city. He was 47 years old.
According to sources, Vijayakumar returned to his camp office around 6:50 am from his morning walk. He asked his personal security officer to hand over his pistol with which he shot himself.
A statement released by DGP Shankar Jiwal said, “It is very saddening to know about the suicide of DGP Vijayakumar. He was under severe depression for the past few days and IG Sudhakar had given counseling to him a day ago. His wife was brought in to Coimbatore since he was under severe depression. But he ended his life when he was with his wife.
Personal reasons were the reasons for his depression. However, a team under IG Sudhakar was formed to investigate the issue.”
Meanwhile, Race Course police officials have registered a case and are further investigating the issue. Alerted by officials on duty, senior officials rushed to the spot. Vijayakumar’s body was recovered and was sent for autopsy to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Autopsy was performed in the presence of tahsildar and forensic experts.
Minister MP Saminathan, ADGP Arun, west zone IG, city police commissioner and SP paid homage to the deceased.
His body was sent to his native Theni in an ambulance.
Sources said that the preliminary investigations revealed that the DIG was under depression due to personal problems. Vijayakumar was a 2009 batch IPS officer. He served as SP in Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts.
He also served as the deputy commissioner at Anna Nagar in Chennai. He was promoted as DIG Coimbatore range on January 6.
