'World No Tobacco Day' is observed every year on May 31 to increase awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco use. This year's theme is "We need food, not tobacco" Dr. Benhur Joel Shadrach, Consultant & Interventional Pulmonologist, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at Rela Hospital, said that smoking is a risk factor for lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer of different organs of the body.
Of all the consultations that they attend, around 700 are for COPD and of these, 70% are related to tobacco use. Of COPD patients, despite having the disease, 30% continue to smoke; there is an urgent need to have anti-smoking clinics and psychologists who monitor patients. Of all the people who smoke, 15% will develop this disease.
