The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo to submit a report on the allegations pertaining to the errors in electoral roll in Erode East constituency. The direction comes based on a complaint filed by the opposition AIADMK.
In a complaint to the commission, the AIADMK claimed that they could not find about 40,000 voters on the electoral roll at the addresses mentioned on the electoral rolls during the door-to-door verification carried out by their partymen.
While the entries of 1,009 voters were found multiple times on the roll, another 7,947 voters were removed from the roll after their demise, they said, adding that they were thinking of moving the Court for a remedy as the winning margin in the previous election was just 8,904 votes.

The CEO in turn has sought a report from the Erode collector cum election officer Krishnanunni on the complaints. The commission held an annual summary revision of electoral rolls in November and December, and the final roll was released only on January 5 after distributing electoral rolls to political parties and holding a meeting with them.
The opposition party did nothing but stayed quiet at that time. Now, if it becomes necessary to do any modifications on the electoral roll, the electoral registration officer should make a reference to the commission through the DEO and CEO, and the final decision would lie with the commission.
