Eight Nagapattinam fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Eight Nagapattinam fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Eight fishermen from Nagapattinam, who had set out in a trawler from Akkaraipettai fishing harbour, were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy after they were alleged to have trespassed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

For years now, numerous fishermen from Tamil Nadu were being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly trespassing the IMBL after seizing their boats and damaging their nets. The Tamil Nadu government has been constantly seeking the support of the union government to initiate actions to release the fishermen and to retrieve their boats.

All the fishermen had travelled in a trawler and they were taken to Kangesan camp in Sri Lanka after arresting them for trespassing the IMBL. The Sri Lankan is said to have attacked the fishermen and damaged their fishing nets.
