Former MLA of Valparai constituency Kovai Thangam passed away at a private hospital in the district on Wednesday due to illness. He was 74 years old.
Thangam who entered politics through Congress, had joined Tamil Manila Congress (TMC). He was elected twice as MLA – once in 2001 as a TMC candidate and then in 2006 on a Congress ticket. He also served as the vice-president of TMC before joining DMK in March, 2021.
Thangam, who was suffering from health issues, had died around 12:30 am on Wednesday and his body was kept at his house in Saibaba colony for final rites which is likely to take place later in the evening.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has taken to Twitter to express his condolences for the death of Thangam.
He said, “It is shocking to know that Kovai Thangam, former MLA from Valparai constituency, had died of heart attack. He worked hard for the welfare of his constituency. He had huge respect and love for me even when he was with another party. I express my hearty condolences to the family members and friends who grieve his death.”
