For the past years, many people who were impacted by the Indian social practices converted to Christianity.
Among them the downtrodden community converts to Christianity or Islam were not included in the Schedule Caste list and as per a law in 1950, only the downtrodden people who follow Hinduism were listed in the Scheduled Caste list.
Because of this the dalits who converted to other religions could not get the benefits of reservation in jobs and education.
For 73 years since then, the demand to include Adhi Dravida Christians and other downtrodden community people who converted to other religions in the Scheduled Caste list continues.
It is in this backdrop that the Chief Minister M.K Stalin has received appreciations for passing a historic resolution in the assembly urging the Union Government to grant all benefits to converted dalits as applicable to Schedule Caste people.
By the resolution the Chief Minister has moved the issue to the next level from a mere legal struggle. The legislative assembly member Ineco Irudhayaraj had written to the Chief Minister regarding this early this month. As a response the Chief Minister has passed the resolution in the end of this month itself. All praise, the MLA Irudhaiyaraj sang a famous thanks giving Tamil cinema song to express his thanks.
In the economic front and in other areas dalit Christians continue to suffer discrimination and ill treatment. Hence it is not fair to deny benefits of reservation to Dalit Christians only because of their conversion.
Dalit Christians have not escaped from the social ineqalities even after their conversion, according to many reports. But the Union Government rejected this demand in 2019. Because of this the gap between the Hindu dalits and the converted dalits has widened.
.It is due to this the resolution that Dalit Christians should be brought under the Scheduled Caste list has been passed in the Tamilnadu assembly.
It will hence not be an exaggeration to say that Christians will be thankful to the Chief Minister always.
