A mega tree plantation drive, which falls in line with the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, was launched by HDFC Bank as part of its Parivartan project, here on Saturday. The event featured the planting of 10,000 saplings on the ELCOT campus. A total of 25,000 saplings will be planted here.
According to an HDFC Bank press statement, the endeavour involves planting 75,000 saplings in Coimbatore, Madurai and Chennai. ELCOT, as the land partner, will provide support for all three project locations.
The NGO partner for this initiative is Round Table India and the exclusive grant support partner is Home to Hope, USA. The tree plantation will be executed by communiTREE.
The vision of the project is to establish a tree tunnel using an intense plantation method, preserving and introducing an urban forest ambience to bring back the lost biodiversity.
Under Parivartan, the bank empowers rural communities, providing on-farm and placement-linked training.
In Bhubaneshwar, its training centre has skilled 1,272 youth in diverse sectors, having already served 1.24 lakh individuals and empowered 7.65 lakh women in entrepreneurship and employment.
The Sustainable Livelihood Initiative, spanning 27 States, focuses on financial inclusion and capacity building, liberating over 96 lakh households from financial dependence
The objectives of the project include restoration of green cover, reduction in atmospheric temperature, reduction of noise and dust pollution and creation of a natural habitat.
Badam, Pungai, Mahagony, Rose Wood, Vengai, Eluppai, Neer Maruthu, Poovarasu, Jackfruit and Vaagai species will be planted.
