The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu due to the formation of an atmospheric circulation over the South Andaman Sea.
According to IMD, the northeast monsoon remains active across the state.
The atmospheric circulation, currently located over the central Andaman Sea and the nearby Gulf of Mannar, is expected to move west-northwest over the next 48 hours and develop into a low-pressure area.
This low-pressure system is likely to move further northwest toward the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 17 and 18. Northern coastal and Delta districts are expected to experience the heaviest downpours.
The IMD has also issued a warning for strong winds, which could reach speeds of up to 55 kmph in the Andaman Sea and nearby areas.
