Students rioting in the classroom with high levels of intoxication, school girls drinking alcohol in the government bus, young girls dancing obscenely in the hostel... All such scenes are taking place in Tamil Nadu. One wonders whether there are more such spectacles in store for us to witness.
Liquor stores provide huge funds to run the government machinery. So the government is not likely to close liquor shops immediately. Bars, which used to be on the outskirts of town, have now come close to home. Bars are also located in the shopping streets.
What can be done to reduce the number of people addicted to alcohol? How to keep away school, college students and youth from it? The Madurai branch of the Madras High Court has condemned youth alcoholism saying, ``Photo of school students drinking alcohol in uniform is shocking. we don't know where the country is going.
A suitable solution should be found for this. Otherwise, the sale of alcohol should be banned,'' the judges have said sternly and painfully. In this situation, the Union Government is planning to bring uniform liquor policy across the country. The Union and State Governments should consult together and take a good decision. As the future of the country is in their hands and the youth should be saved from addiction!
