JICA officials inspect AIIMS site in Madurai

Officials from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) along with president of All India Institute for Medical Science (AIIMS) Madurai inspected the construction site On January 27, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid foundation stone and kick-started the works to construct AIIMS building on 224.24 acres of land at Thoppu in Madurai district at the cost of Rs 1,264 crore.

At the inaugural function, the union government said that the construction works would be completed within 45 months. But even after three years, the construction work has not started in a full-fledged manner. However, the union government had enrolled students for the college this year and they were being taught at Ramanathapuram medical college.Meanwhile, in July, the union government had announced that JICA has completed the designing for building construction and released Rs 1,500 crore in the first installment.

They further said that they would start getting approvals for the building construction by 2023 and bring the institute for public use by 2028. In this situation, officials from JICA inspected the construction site along with 
AIIMS Madurai president Dr V Nagarajan and discussed the status of the construction process with concerned officials
