With incidence of cancer escalating, Dr Rupa Renganathan, Lead Consultant - Breast Imaging and Interventions, Kovai Medical Centre & Hospital, Coimbatore advocates the importance of self-examination and preventive screenings to timely detect any lumps or irregularities in the breast area at an early stage.
Outlining the benefits of preventive screenings and check-ups, Dr Renganathan said, “Breast cancer screening means examining a woman’s breasts for cancer even before there are signs or symptoms of the disease.
Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can greatly help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Regular self-examination of the breast and mammograms post age 40 as advised by the physician should be done to timely detect and diagnose any irregularity or presence of lumps in the breast. Unfortunately, women are ignorant about preventive care in the country which is the change we need to bring.”
Timely detection and treatment are instrumental in reducing the risk of mortality among patients.
