The central government had planned to extract coal from Vadaseri, Chethyathoppu, Michaelpatti and other areas in the Cauvery Delta area, which had already been declared a protected agricultural zone in Tamil Nadu. There was strong opposition to this decision of the central government from political leaders and farmers.
Following this, Chief Minister M.K.Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi asking him to exclude delta areas from the bidding process for coal to protect the interests of the farmers of Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, parties including AIADMK and BJP also opposed the coal mining project.
Chief Minister M.K.Stalin had said that Tamil Nadu government will not give permission for central government coal mines for any reason while a special attention resolution has been brought in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly regarding the issue of new coal mines.
Following this, the central government has announced that it will abandon the coal mining project in the delta region of Tamil Nadu. Union Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi has said that the plan to set up the mine will be cancelled respecting the sentiments of the people. Ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Tamil Nadu, the announcement that the coal mining tender has been abandoned is to be welcomed.
All parties in Tamil Nadu have raised a war cry against the Delta Coal Project. While Tamil Nadu is in turmoil, even if it is canceled in order to respect the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu; on the union government bowed to strong opposition and issued the cancellation notice however Tamil Nadu has won.
