LifeCell Select brings affordable umbilical cord blood preservation to Puducherry

In a bid to bolster affordable and increased access to stem cell banking plans in India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas, LifeCell International has announced the expansion of its LifeCell Select plans to Puducherry.  According to a press release from the company, LifeCell Select offers cost-effective and convenient access to stem cell banking plans. 

These plans enable parents to preserve the valuable umbilical cord blood of their newborns, which contains stem cells that can be used to treat over 90 medical conditions, including inherited blood disorders, metabolic disorders, immune disorders, and blood cancers, among others.

Cell transplants in India

HLA match is the process of determining a match between donor and recipient HLA antigens, which reduces the chance of rejection. At present, there is a requirement for over 50,000 stem cell transplants in India each year, however, less than 2,000 are actually being carried out.

In addition, there is a lack of access to stem cell units for transplants, beyond metro regions, due to financial constraints. LifeCell is addressing this gap with its stem cell banking services, which provide a safe and long-term method to preserve umbilical cord blood.
