A large number of people complained to Housing Minister S Muthusamy that there was a acute drinking water shortage in the Rajajipuram area of the 35th ward of the Erode Corporation. When the Minister inaugurated construction of 3 rooms to attend pregnant women in the PHC there at a cost of Rs 21 lakh the residents told him ''under the newly developed Rs 540 cr Ooratchikottai drinking water project, they didn't get water even once in 10 days. So, the people in the area are having a hard time.
Under the UGD project, the rainwater drainage systems were replaced near the Central bus stand. So, the rain water stagnates in the low-lying area of Rajajipuram. The drainage facility near the bus stand has to be relocated to solve the problem. When Periyar was Chairman of Erode municipality in 1917, he allowed hundreds of SCs, producing chappals, to stay there with exempting them to pay property tax. Now, under the Ooratchikottai scheme, household water connections are given in all areas.
But, here, the corporation officials said household water connections would be given only to those who remit property tax. Most of the people in the area wanted water connection without seeking property tax. Many houses in the area have been given pattas. But nearly 300 houses didn't yet get pattas. They conduct domestic functions on roads only as there is no community hall in the area. So, the corporation should use a land near Kamaraj HSS to build a community hall there. The Minister assured to do the needful. Many people including Collector Krishnan Unni and Corporation Commissioner Sivakumar were present at the event.
