As per Central Pollution Control Guidelines (available at www.tnpcb.gov.in), people should immerse Vinayagar idols only at the water bodies specified by the district administration and cooperate to protect the environment, collector H Krishnanunni said.
The idols should be made of clay and eco-friendly ingredients, free of plaster of paris (PoP), plastic and thermocol (polystyrene). Dry flower elements, straw etc. can be used to make ornaments of idols.
Also, natural resins of trees can be used to make the idols shiny. Enamel and synthetic dye based paints should not be used on idols, instead only eco friendly water based / biodegradable / non toxic natural dyes should be used.
Only decorative garments made of organic materials and natural dyes should be used. Ganesha idols will be allowed to be dissolved only in the places specified by the District Administration as per the norms of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
Public is requested to celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi festival in an environment friendly way. District Collector, SP and District Environmental Engineer may be approached for further details.
