PIL filed seeking direction to remove images of Gandhi, God from footwears, inner wears

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before Madras High Court seeking its intervention to direct e-commerce companies to remove the images of Mahatma Gandhi and the Gods from footwears and inner wears. The litigant, Muthukumar, in his petition said that such activities hurt the sentiments of the public and posed a threat to harmony.

The petitioner sought the Court to direct both the union and state government to take steps to move such images from inner wears and footwears.  Hearing the petition, a bench comprising of Chief Justice (acting) Justice Raja and Justice Krishnakumar, directed both the union and state government to answer within four weeks before adjourning the case.
