Jai Bhim Makkal Katchi state president A Arivazhagan appealed to the state government to implement long pending Pandiyaru-Moyar project to improve water level in the Bavanisagar dam to meet the growing water needs of ryots.
Since 1965, Pandiyaru-Punnampuzha river link project was sought by ryots. Now it is called as Pandiyaru-Moyar link project. Bavani river originated from Kundha in the Nilgiris and Moyaru in Gudalur-Mukkurthi hill and reached Bavanisagar dam as Bavani river which is a source of irrigation for 4 lakh acres in LBP, Kalingarayan, Tadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacuts and many drinking water projects in Erode, Karur and Tirupur districts. But, due to fall in the arrival of water to the dam in the past, water problem surfaced for both irrigation and drinking water projects. So, there is a demand to divert the water of Moyar river which is wasted into Arabic sea as Pandiyaru river to Bavanisagar dam.
Arivazhagan said ''Punnampuzha river originated due to the merger of 2 wild rivers in Gudalur municipal area and Pandiyaru originated at Oveli town panchayat. Both the rivers merge and enter as Saliyaru river in Kerala and reach Arabic sea without having any irrigation system. So, nearly, 14 tmc water is wasted into the sea every year.
''If the water of Pandiyaru river is diverted into Bavanisagar dam via Moyar river by using motors, tunnels and concrete pipes, the Bavanisagar dam ayacuts and Athikadavu-Avinasi water project would get adequate water. Already, many rounds of talks were held between Kerala and TN on the issue. Now, talks should again be started to use the water which drained into the Arabic sea, as the CPM and DMK were close allies in the INDIA front,'' he pleaded.
