A free bicycle distribution ceremony at Pagalpatti Government Higher Secondary School near Omalur, Salem District, turned contentious when PMK MLA Arul, representing Salem West Constituency, faced off with the DMK party during the event.
As a special invitee, MLA Arul addressed the students, emphasizing the joint effort of all parties for the welfare of the school students and the community.
He announced ongoing construction of a new classroom, a project that had been discussed in previous state assembly sessions.
Expressing a desire to swiftly conclude the event, having attended a science fair at a nearby college, Arul handed out bicycles to the students and directed his speech towards the school headmaster.
This angered the ruling party DMK’s representative who argued they were not given a chance to speak and that as the ruling party, they were essential for such initiatives.
The disagreement sparked a controversy, with both sides asserting their roles in the event. Arul pointed out that the bicycle distribution was a non-political government initiative for the benefit of the students.
In an effort to diffuse the tension, the MLA publicly apologised for the incident by falling on the students' feet, sparking exitment among them.
The incident has brought out the nexus between politics and education.
