Avadi city police gunned down two history-sheeters in an ‘encounter’ after they tried to escape from police custody at Sholavaram near the city in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Muthu Saravanan and Sathish, residents of Puzhal. They were killed around 3:30 am on Thursday.
According to sources, the duo were involved in multiple crimes including murder cases. Muthu Saravanan was classified as A plus rowdy with more than 13 cases including seven murder cases registered against him and five criminal cases were registered as Sathish. Police were searching for them in connection with the murder of Parthiban, a Tiruvallur district functionary of the AIADMK.
A four-membered gang murdered him when he was at a temple in Padianallur on August 17. They were also involved in the murder of C Selvam, a DMK functionary, in Madipakkam in the city.
Police had managed to surround the duo at a dilapidated building in Marapedu Kandigai.
But the accused attacked three police personnel and injured them in their attempts to flee the spot. In retaliation, police shot at them.
They were rushed to the government Stanley hospital in the city but doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Police personnel are undergoing treatment at the hospital.Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and are investigating the matter.
