Mathematician Ramanujan's Math Lab is functioning at Kongu College of Arts and Science College, Erode, since 2019, to incite students interest on maths.
College Principal Thangavel, Principal Dr H Vasudevan, Maths HoD Dr S Nagarajan said: The Ministry of Science and Technology of the Union Government is helping to develop science courses in colleges through the Department of Biotechnology. Under that Star College Scheme, our college has been given financial assistance of about Rs 1.44 cr in the last five years. Under it, the new lab was established in the Department of Mathematics at an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakhs. The lab has two state-of-the-art maths related computer software, ten computers, a printer and 30 mathematical models like Pythagoras, Trigonometry, Parabola, Transfer of Momentum, Craft Theories, Algebra, Measurements, Tower of Brahma etc.
This is for the students who are pursuing UG, PG, Ph.D. in this department. The laboratory is used extensively for research. The lab helps students to conduct experiments directly with these instruments and prepare themselves for competitive exams.
In particular, the lab equipments are directly transported to many schools in college buses and the college professors give simple explanations about mathematics to the students of classes 6 to 10. Many government school students visit the laboratory to learn maths. It also helps to provide refresher training to school teachers. National Computer Tools Institute awardee Dinesh Anbu has come here and trained school teachers. Mathematics is said to be the Queen of All Sciences. Mathematics is the foundation of all scientific works. But today students are losing interest in mathematics.
Many choose Computer Science. But, IT firms choose Maths students also for employment because students who studied mathematics can easily develop computer software. In all the competitive examinations, questions related to maths occupy more marks. So those who study maths can easily crack the competitive exams.
Apart from this, there is a high demand for maths teachers who can earn substantial income by taking maths tuition from home. There is a demand for people who have studied mathematics at ISRO, statistics and many other fields. The lab is on the model of Ramanujam Institute of Advanced Studies of TN government in Chennai.
