READ programme for cleanliness workers

Sathy based NGO-READ organised an awareness programme for cleanliness workers at Sathy on laws against manual scavenging.The training was organized in collaboration with Sathy Municipality for sanitary workers. The resource persons said ''lndia has banned the practice under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. The term "manual scavenger" broadly represents sanitation workers who are involved in cleaning, carrying and disposing of untreated human excreta. 

The Act recognizes this as a "dehumanizing practice," and cites a need to "correct the historical injustice and indignity suffered by the manual scavengers. So,  the workers should not be engaged in manual scavenging,'' they said.
