Various ryots associations and panchayat presidents held a meeting under the leadership of DMK environment wing state president Karthikeya Sivasenapathy, at Kuttapalayam in Tirupur district, on Wednesday and adopted a resolution urging the government to withdraw a GO 276, 9.11.2020,issued during the previous AIADMK rule on modernisation of LBP main canal at a cost of Rs 733 cr. Farmers association leaders and panchayat presidents KR Sudantararaju, Ravi, Podaran, Sengottaiyan, Krishnamurthi, Geethamani, Senthilkumar, Eswaramurthy, Balasubramaniam, Deivasigamani, Devanasamy and Krishnaveni attended the meeting. A resolution passed at the meeting said as the concretisation project would hit many ryots, the GO should be withdrawn.
Instead, the weak spots of the earthen bund of the canal should be strengthened. Due to the opposition of the ryots, the scheme was withheld. A case was also pending in the HC and Green Tribunal in this regard.
But, the Housing Minister S Muthusamy held consultation with ryots to carry out the project. If need be, the old bridges, culverts, sluizes and damaged portions of the bunds should alone be modernised, it said.
