TN Small and Marginal Farmers Association state president KR Sudantararasu appealed to the government to grant bank loan to renovate irrigation wells of ryots.
He said Bhavanisagar Dam is the main source of water in Erode district. Last year, water was released from the dam for Thadappally-Arakkankottai, Kalingarayan and Keelpavani irrigation without any hindrance.Last year, Erode district received good rainfall which was 25 per cent more.
So, a total of 14 lakes and about 1,000 ponds in the district brimmed to its full capacity. Last year's heavy rains ensured more water in the wells. The farmers undertook the cultivation work. Currently, the water level in the wells has dropped due to the onset of summer.
In most of the wells, the perimeter wall is damaged and the wells are filled with soil. So, loans should be provided to farmers to renovate such irrigation wells. In the district, farmers are cultivating 10 lakh acres through well and canal irrigation.Of this, sugarcane alone has been cultivated in an area of 50,000 acres
It rained well last year. So, more than 100
ponds were completely filled up.So, co-operative banks should come forward to provide a medium term loan of Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh for deepening and renovating wells.
