Minister for Co-operation I Periyasamy on Thursday launched the scheme to sell small cylinders at ration shops. Cylinders weighing two kilograms and five kilograms will be sold at ration shops. Public sector companies including Indian oil corporation have been selling small gas cylinders to the migrant workers and daily wage labourers. Minister Periyasamy had earlier announced that the gas cylinders will be sold through the ration shops.
Naming the two-kilogram cylinder as Munna and five-kilogram cylinder as Chottu, he has kick-started the cylinder sales at Thiruvallikeni cooperative societies in Chennai. Following this, the government has plans to extend the scheme to all ration shops and grocery shops in the state.At present, domestic cylinders weighing 14.2 kilograms and commercial cylinders weighing 19 kilograms are sold through agencies and they require residential certificates to avail gas connection.
As many move out of their cities for employment and struggle to get residential certificates, the government has decided to sell small gas cylinders.To avail two-kilogram cylinder, one need to pay Rs 958 and for five-kilogram cylinder, one need to pay Rs 1,515 for the first time and from the second time, it could be procured
for Rs 250 and Rs 575.50. The price might change according to the market rate.
