Sripuram Srinarayani Hospital has successfully performed Tamil Nadu’s first ankle bone transplant, marking a significant milestone in orthopedic surgery.
Medical Director Dr. N Balaji commended the hospital’s fracture surgery department, operating under the guidance of Sri Shakthi Amma, for achieving this breakthrough. The patient, 20-year-old Diliprai, suffered severe leg pain and difficulty walking after a fall three months ago. Medical scans, including X-ray, CT, and MRI, revealed an ankle fracture accompanied by blood vessel necrosis.
Traditional repair methods using plates and screws often have a low success rate in such cases. Considering the patient’s young age and long-term mobility needs, the surgical team opted for an advanced approach. Led by orthopedic specialist Dr. Regith Mathews, along with Dr. Thirumalai Mohan and anesthesiologist Dr. Krishnan, the team used artificial intelligence to match the patient’s previous ankle structure. CT scan images assisted in precisely coordinating the transplant.
Dr. Balaji expressed pride in the hospital’s achievement, highlighting that this was the first successful artificial ankle surgery in Tamil Nadu. The breakthrough offers hope for improved treatment options for complex ankle fractures in the future.
