The Farmers' Grievance Redressal Day meeting was held on Friday at the Salem District Collectorate under the leadership of District Collector Dr. R. Brindadevi. In a move to support farmers, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced an additional incentive of Rs.105 per quintal of normal paddy and Rs.130 per quintal of light paddy during the Kareeb procurement season.
Dr. Brindadevi highlighted the importance of these monthly grievance meetings in addressing farmers' issues and promoting agricultural productivity through various schemes of the Tamilnadu government.
The Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme was also discussed, encouraging farmers to insure their crops such as green lentil, flat lentil, paddy, corn, gram, groundnut, and ragi for the current kharif season. Farmers were advised to pay the necessary premium through Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies, Commercial Banks, and Public Service Centers, ensuring protection against natural calamities.
Salem district maintains adequate fertilizer stocks, with 28,498 MT available, including 6,201 MT of urea, 1,766 MT of DAP, 1,821 MT of potash, and 18,710 MT of complex fertilizers. The district has received 266 mm of rainfall up to June 2024, contributing to the cultivation of 16,114.9 hectares of crops till the end of May, the collector informed.
An exhibition was also held on seed selection and sowing methods, organized by the Seed Certification and Membership Certification Department and the Agricultural Producers' Association.
Key officials, including Dr.P. Maneka, District Revenue Officer, Ms. Akriti Sethi, Assistant Collector (Training), Mr. S. Singharam, Joint Director of Agriculture, and Mr. P. Iravikumar Joint Registrar of Co-operative Societies, attended the meeting along with concerned officials and farmers.
