The Tamil Nadu government has issued flood warnings and directed the people living in the low-lying delta districts to move to safer places as water discharge from Mettur dam has been considerably increased due to the rise in inflow. As on Tuesday, about 1.85 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the dam as the inflow to the dam from KR Sagar and Kabini reservoirs was increased to the same quantity.
While the Public Works Department (PWD) is discharging about 23,000 cusecs of water through its power plants, about 1.62 lakh cusecs of water was discharged through 16-vent surplus sluices.Following the alert from the department that they might further increase the outflow of the dam due to the incessant rainfall in its catchment
areas, the state government had directed the people residing in the low-lying areas in delta districts to move to a safer place.
The inflow of Hogenakkal falls in Dharmapuri district has increased to 1.85 cusecs on Monday evening from 1.35 lakh cusecs on Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has increased its excess water discharged to 2.12 lakh cusecs. District administrations are closely monitoring the situation.
