A petition was submitted to Nagarathinam Subramaniam, Mayor of Erode Corporation, urging the Tamil Nadu Government to withdraw the steep hike in property tax. Regarding this, a petition was given to her by the members of Erode Taxpayers Welfare Association, District Consumer Protection Center and Home Owners Association led by association secretary Bharathi. Earlier, they staged a demo in the Erode Corporation. They thanked the government for announcing another mofussil bus stand for Erode at Solar.
They pleaded to withdraw the property tax hike and garbage collection tax as per the election promise. If there is a need property tax can be hiked by 5 to 10 percent and exemtion to the new buildings constructed within 10 years as already hefty tax was slapped on them.
If the front of a building was used for commercial use and the rear was for residential use, commercial tax was slapped for entire building. For residence, residential tax and commercial use, commercial tax can be imposed. The property tax should be less for upper floors. Tax percentage should be reduced according to usage.
The government should enact a law to set up a tax appeal committee headed by the mayor and deputy mayor in the municipal corporation instead of retired judge as in the case of municipalities. The Corporation should issue a formal notice and collect the tax from the building owners, they pleaded.
