The 125th annual flower show kick-started on Friday at the government botanical garden in Ooty in the city. Over one lakh flowers were used to make intricate sculptures of figures including peacocks.
To entertain the tourists visiting the town during the summer season, the horticulture department has been conducting various shows in the district.
They would organize a vegetable show at Kothagiri, rose and flower show in Ooty, fruits show in Coonoor and perfume show in Gudalur.
As a part of its annual shows, the department inaugurated the flower show at the government botanical garden in the town and it would take place for five days.Tourism minister Ramachandran and Nilgiris MP A Raja took part in the inaugural function along with the district collector Amrith.
The park was filled with various types of colorful flowers.
The department had used about 45,000 carnation flowers to create an 18-foot-long and 40-foot-wide sculpture of a peacock.
Lakhs of flowers were used to create sculptures of cheetahs, butterflies, dolphins, pandas, a dancing woman, Senganthal flower, dove, trees and a selfie-spot among others.
Floral decorations were made to denote the 125th annual flower show, the 175th year of establishment of the botanical garden and 200 years since the formation of Ooty. Flowers were brought in from various districts including Hosur and Bengaluru.
Various government departments have set up stalls at the show and various items including vegetables, perfumes and fruits, were displayed to explain their importance to the visitors. Over 35,000 flower pots were used for decorations and flowers like orchid and Williams were used to attract the visitors.
Following the increase in visitors to the town, most of the roads were found congested with vehicles.
Over 1,500 police personnel were deployed across the district to streamline the traffic.
The district administration has also been operating over 50 additional buses for the tourists.
Almost all the lodges and accommodations were found filled in the district.
