TN ranks second in India in suicides

TN ranks second in India in suicides

Tamil Nadu ranks second after Maharashtra among the states with the highest number of suicides in India.
In 2003, the World Health Organization started observing 10th September as World Suicide Prevention Day to create awareness about this among people. Snegam Foundation launched a free suicide prevention telephone service in Chennai many years back. On that model, Nesam Foundation was started at Erode by Manathin Mayyam trust founder psychiatrist Dr Jayaprakash Jagadeesan.

People of suicidal tendency  can contact 50 volunteers of Nesam between 12 noon to 8 pm on phone No 0424 2220022 to air their grievances and get appropriate counselling. Actor Sathyaraj, Sneham Foundation Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar, former Director KV Sankaranarayanan, Former Minister Subbulakshmi Jegatheesan, Dr. Jayaprakash Jegatheesan, Makkal Sinthanai Peravai President Stalin Gunasekaran, Sakthi Masala President PC Duraisamy, Prof.Jayantashree Balakrishnan, URC Chairman C Devarajan Nesam Coordinator Dr. Vetrivel spoke.

In India 1.33 lakh people died in road accidents, 29193 were murdered, 1.49 lakh died due to Corona, 1.53 lakh committed suicide last year.

22027 in Maharashtra, 18925 in TN,16,965 in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500 in West Bengal and 13,500 in Karnataka committed suicide. Of the total suicides in India, 50% occurred in South India alone. In Bihar, where literacy rate is low, suicides are less.

TN has more literacy rate and more suicides than Bihar. Suicide is a sudden impulsive decision due to a conflicted mood. Loneliness, being ignored by others, not getting respect, problems in family relationships, old age, chronic diseases, poveety, mental distress, loss in business, agriculture, failure in love affairs, exam, etc., are few reasons for suicides. ,

Talking out of one's heart, reading books, sharing stress with others, working for the welfare of society, etc would prevent suicidal  tendency. In the joint families in those days children faced many disappointments.
So, they tolerated failures after becoming adults. But, now we give our children everything that we don't get and make them happy.

They can't bear even a small failure. So, they are motivated to commit suicide. Government provides counselling to college and school students to prevent suicides. The NGOs should do it by starting Sneham, Nesam like outfits. People should approch the persons having suicidal tendency with much compassion and empathy to save them.

NEET OPPOSED: In his speech, Sathyaraj said his personal view is NEET affects the aspiring first generation graduates much. Just like me, the wards of  educated and affluent parents can easily study. But, others face difficulty.

Apart from this, there are various reasons for suicide. It is the duty of the society to prevent suicide.
That is why charitable organizations like Nesam have been created. More awareness and self confidence should be created among people. to check suicidal tendency. For me, all MGR songs would raise self confidence. Medias create an image that actors know everything. Today all heroes are superheroes. They jump from one mountain to another and knock down 10 people in one step. So media should ask the relevant experts to tackle  the problem, he said.
