Due to fall in yield, the price of vegetables rose steeply and the price of tomato touched Rs 40 per kg in Erode district. Every day 4,000 boxes of tomatoes were brought to the market from places like Kollegal, Krishnagiri, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Mysore.
Tomatoes were selling at Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg last week due to high yield. It has been raining extensively in various districts of Tamil Nadu and other states for the last one week.
Due to this, the yield of tomatoes decreased and the supply of tomatoes started declining. Due to this, the price of tomatoes has started rising during the last few days and sold for Rs 25 to Rs 30. On Wednesday, the prices have risen to Rs 40 due to fall in supply from 4,000 to 2,000 boxes. Thus the price of tomatoes skyrocketed. Traders expect further rise in price in coming days.
