Two killed as ambulance topples in Coimbatore

An ambulance crashed in Coimbatore, killing two people, including a child and the driver on Tuesday.

Sivasankaran (26) from Udumalaipettai and his wife Ramya gave birth to a baby boy at a private hospital in Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur district yesterday morning. But the doctors recommended that the child be sent to Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment as he was still suffering from shortness of breath.

Following this, the child, the child's father Sivasankar, relatives Palanisamy, Shakunthala, Valli and the private hospital nurse arrived in Coimbatore by ambulance. The ambulance was driven by Raveendran.

When the ambulance came near Malumichampatti, it suddenly lost control and collided with a roadside barrier and overturned on the road. The baby and ambulance driver Raveendran died on the spot. The injured Palanisamy and Valli were rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

Shakuntala was rushed to Coimbatore Government Hospital with head injuries. Madukkarai police recovered the bodies and sent them to Coimbatore Government Hospital for autopsy. They also removed the ambulance lying on the road through an earthmover. Police are investigating the incident.
