The Vummidi Bangaru Chetty family, makers of the Sengol that is now placed behind the Speaker’s chair in the Lok Sabha at the new Parliament building, New Delhi, have been felicitated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi celebrating India’s 75th year of independence. Mr. Vummidi Anil Kumar, a prominent member of the family, returned from a momentous ceremony held at the Hon’ble Prime Minister's residence on May 27th, 2023, filled with extreme joy and honour.
The ceremony recognized the historical importance of the Sengol and emphasized its relevance and enduring value in shaping India's future. Mr. Vummidi Anil Kumar takes pride in mentioning that this shop served as the very location for delivering the Sengol to the Adheenams in 1947 and is the oldest premises (Vummidi Dwarknath Jewelers fondly known as the “Corner shop” in Parrys, Chennai) of the Vummidi family having established in the 1920s.
Expressing gratitude, Mr. Vummidi Anil Kumar extends heartfelt appreciation to the esteemed elder Mr. Vummidi Anil Kumar and Family (Mrs. Vummidi Aparna Lakshmi, Mr. Aniruddha Vummidi and Mr. Pradyumna Vummidi) have been honored for their dedication and commitment to conceptualizing and creating the Sengol in 1947. The re-discovery of the Sengol holds immense cultural and historical significance for the Vummidi family and the nation.
It was presented to India's first Prime Minister, Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru, on August 14, 1947, marking the transfer of power from the British Government to India. Mr. Vummidi Anil Kumar expresses his gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri.
