Walkathon held to create awareness about eye donation in Coimbatore

As part of the 38th National Eye Donation Awareness Campaign 2024, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, in collaboration with Annai Meenakshi College of Nursing, organised a walkathon in Coimbatore today to promote the importance of eye donation. The event, which aimed to raise awareness about the critical need for eye donations, began at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, proceeded through Poomarket Road, and concluded near the RS Puram Post Office.
Coimbatore Mayor R Ranganayagi, who served as the Chief Guest, flagged off the event. Among the participants were Dr. Jayashree Arunaprakash, Medical Director at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, along with Dr. Aditya, Dr. Santhonu Chakraborthi, and Dr. Indumathi. Over 100 students from Annai Meenakshi College of Nursing joined the walkathon, alongside a large number of doctors, staff from Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, and members of the public.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Ranganayagi emphasised the significance of eye donation in combating visual impairment, particularly in developing countries like India. She highlighted the Tamil Nadu government's efforts to increase public awareness about eye donation and encouraged residents of Coimbatore to pledge their eyes for donation. "If everyone in Coimbatore comes forward, we can become the first district in Tamil Nadu with 100% eye donors," she stated.
The walkathon aimed to inspire more people to join the eye donation movement, ensuring that many lives can be transformed through the gift of sight.
