Bhavanisagar Dam is the main source of drinking water for the people of Erode district. The main catchment area of the Dam with a capacity of 105 feet is the Nilgiris.
2 lakh 47 thousand acres in Erode, Karur and Tiruppur districts are being irrigated through the Dam. The water level in the dam has been declining due to lack of rainfall in the catchment area for the last few days.
The water level of the dam is declining rapidly as more water is being discharged from the dam for irrigation and drinking water than the inflow.
The dam received 2,812 cusecs of water yesterday due to widespread rains in the Nilgiris. Due to lack of rainfall today, the water level in the Dam is low.
As of this morning, the water level of the Dam is 82.21 feet and inflow is 1,411 cusecs.
500 cusecs is being released from the dam for Kalingarayan irrigation, 200 cusecs in the Bhavani river for drinking and 2,100 cusecs for LBP ayacut.
