Youth shakes hand with district collector with prosthesis

A 22-year-old man, who lost his upper limbs below the elbow and lower limbs below the knee due to electrocution, shook hands with the district collector GS Sameeran with his prosthetic limbs. It was provided by the artificial limb centre of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

A resident of Vepampallam near Annur, Subash was discharged from CMCH after completing a series of counselling and training by a multi-disciplinary team including a psychologist, orthotist, physiotherapist and orthopaedic surgeon. He then met the collector.

He suffered an electric shock at a construction site earlier this year while mixing concrete mixture in a pillar frame with an iron rod. His co-workers rescued and admitted him to the government hospital where his hands below the elbow and legs below the knee were amputated.

After examining Subash in person, the medical team decided to make a light-weight artificial limb for both upper and lower limbs under Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme. He was admitted to the hospital on June8 and all the four limbs were filled with customized prosthesis.
