District Collector H. Krishnanunni said that 103 dams are being constructed in Erode district at an estimated cost of Rs. 16.02 crore.
He inspected the dams being constructed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme under the auspices of the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats in Bargur Panchayat, Anthiyur Panchayat Union.
He said the dams raise the groundwater level and provide water to agricultural lands. In order to protect agriculture, 16 dams worth Rs. 285.50 lakhs in Ammapet, 23 dams worth of Rs. 281.23 lakhs in Anthiyur, 9 dams worth Rs. 112.70 lakh in Bavani, 4 dams worth Rs. 143 lakh in Gobi, 2 dams worth Rs 8.42 lakh in kodumudi, 4 dams worth Rs. 133.92 lakhs in Modakurichi, 4 dams worth Rs. 43 lakhs in Perundurai, 21 dams worth Rs. 446.67 lakhs in Thalavadi, and 5 dams worth Rs. 87.61 lakhs in TN Palayam are being constructed and the work is in progress. A total of 103 dams worth Rs. 16.02 crore are being constructed in 11 blocks. 21 dams are under construction in the Bargur panchayat and 21 in the Talawadi area, he added.
