A 9-year-old girl Selvi from the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh had an unsightly hump on her back which was gradually increasing in curvature since a very young age, and she was unable to move around freely.
She was diagnosed with scoliosis which is a deformity of the spine that worsens her growth, if untreated the curve will become more progressive and can cause more compression on the spinal cord leading to paralysis. Since they were poor, crowd funding was sought Doctors at Dr Mehta’s hospital successfully straightened the spine under the closed monitoring of the spinal cord using a Neuromonitoring device and the surgery lasted for 5 hours.
Following the surgery, the child did very well and after a short stay in the post-operative ward, she was shifted to the regular ward significantly straighter and taller. She was able to sit and stand within a few days after surgery
