Governor R.N Ravi has written a letter to the Chief Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Government, refusing to approve the draft law for the appointment of University Vice-Chancellors in Tamil Nadu.
Why is the Governor refusing to give approval to the State Government's draft law for the appointment of University Vice-Chancellors? Does he think he has more powers than the elected state government?
In the states of Gujarat and Telangana, the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor is done by the state governments themselves. In those states appointments are made as per the rules. The TN government has decided to bring the same in Tamil Nadu.
It is not acceptable for the Governor to say that there will be 'political interference' if the Bill is passed. Shouldn't the governor trust the state government elected by the people, the state’s chief minister? Then why there is an election? Why did the people have the right to vote? It appears that there is a justification for Gujarat and another justification for Tamil Nadu.
The court intervened and sacked the illegal vice-chancellors appointed by the governor during the last AIADMK regime. Why did it happen? In a university in a state, a governor should not be the one to introduce anti-democratic politics. Examples include conducting a separate empiresuch as holding a separate conference for Vice-Chancellors and conducting graduation ceremonies without consulting the Minister of Higher Education.
The people of Tamil Nadu are watching what is going on. It is in this background that the state government needed to enact a new law. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin is working tirelessly to maintain a smooth relationship with the Union Government and the Governor and for Tamil Nadu to move forward in all sectors. The people of Tamil Nadu will never like anyone who stands in the way of that!
