India's neighbor Sri Lanka experienced an unprecedented economic crisis last year. People raised the flag of war against the rulers. Thus, the Rajapakse brothers who were in power in Sri Lanka were thrown out of power. Ranil Wickramasinghe was sworn in as the President of Sri Lanka with the support of all parties.
India provided great assistance to Sri Lanka when it was in an economic crisis. India extended full support to Sri Lanka like no other country. As a result, Sri Lanka is now recovering from a severe economic crisis.
In this environment, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India on a 2-day visit. He met Prime Minister Modi in Delhi yesterday. At that time, agreements were signed in the fields of passenger ferry service from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka, India's UPI, acceptance of UPI money transfer in Sri Lanka and economic development.
In this meeting, not only the welfare of Eelam Tamils but also the unresolved issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen has been discussed.
Prime Minister Modi said in his Tamil tweet:- The issue of our hardworking fishermen was also focused on in his talks with President Ranil Wickremesinghe. We both agree that this matter should be approached on a humanitarian basis and with compassion," he said.
Tamil Nadu fishermen are occasionally shot and killed by the Sri Lankan navy, who beat and harass them, confiscating their boats and damaging their nets. At least once or twice a month, fishermen from Tamil Nadu are arrested and imprisoned in Sri Lanka for fishing across the border.
There is no doubt that there will be a permanent solution to the problem of Tamil Nadu fishermen only if Kachchatheevu is restored. It is not something that can happen immediately. Although it is unlikely that the Indian Prime Minister and the Sri Lankan President have discussed it, the big thing is that they are talking about the welfare of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
In the first phase, if the situation where the fishermen of Tamil country can go to the sea and fish without fear, it will be the Himalayan achievement of our Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Modi's voice for the fishermen of Tamil Nadu cannot be mere politics.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
