AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami announced plans for a significant human chain protest scheduled for October 8, 2024, in response to what he described as the numerous hardships imposed on the people of Tamil Nadu by the DMK government over the last 40 months. The protest will occur simultaneously across all municipal corporation circles, municipalities, and townships throughout the state, with a particular focus on demanding the immediate withdrawal of the recently increased property tax.
In a detailed statement, Palaniswami expressed strong condemnation of the current administration, stating that the DMK government has created an environment of lawlessness and chaos, which has hindered the daily lives of citizens. He articulated his grievances, claiming that whenever the DMK comes to power, it leads to rising prices, rampant corruption, and a lack of basic facilities for the public. He highlighted the suffering of the people as a direct result of the government's policies, asserting that the DMK’s tenure has been characterised by increased electricity tariffs, exorbitant costs for essential goods, and escalating fees for services such as bond registration and property taxes.
Palaniswami emphasised that the DMK government has been involved in various anti-people activities, including monopolistic control over the cinema industry and illicit practices in the real estate sector.
He voiced particular concern regarding the recent increase in property taxes by 6 percent annually, on top of the previous hikes of 100 and 150 percent, stating that this additional burden disproportionately affects the lower and middle-class populations. He urged the public to recognise the detrimental impact these policies have on their livelihoods, suggesting that the government’s actions are contributing to widespread economic distress.
The AIADMK leader further criticised the DMK for its failure to maintain public safety, pointing to rising incidents of violence, including murder and sexual assaults, as well as the alarming increase in drug-related issues within Tamil Nadu. He lamented that under Stalin’s administration, citizens have been subjected to constant turmoil, which he believes will ultimately lead to public unrest.
Palaniswami called upon all AIADMK party members, as well as farmers, traders, and various labour groups, to actively participate in the upcoming human chain protest. He urged them to unite against what he termed the oppressive regime of the DMK government and to stand in solidarity for the welfare of the people. By doing so, he aims to highlight the ongoing struggles faced by the citizens and advocate for necessary changes that will alleviate their suffering.
In conclusion, Palaniswami reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu and expressed hope that this protest would serve as a catalyst for change, ultimately leading to the withdrawal of the increased property tax and the restoration of essential services and support for the citizens.
