The number of people addicted to social media and online games is increasing rapidly in India. To address this growing concern, a special center will be set up at AIIMS, Delhi, to treat children and youth struggling with internet addiction. This initiative will be led by Dr. Yadan Pal Singh Palhara of AIIMS, Delhi.
The Economic Survey of India has highlighted that excessive internet use is causing mental health issues among children and adolescents. It has stressed the urgent need for interventions at both school and family levels to help affected youth disconnect from the internet. In response, for the first time in India, a specialised center is being established at AIIMS, Delhi, to combat internet addiction.
This center will focus on various internet-related addictions and will incorporate artificial intelligence technology in its treatments. There is no doubt that this initiative will help reduce stress, depression, anxiety, and addiction linked to excessive internet and technology use.
Many medical centers already exist to rehabilitate individuals addicted to substances like alcohol and drugs. However, internet addiction has also become a serious concern, sometimes leading to even worse consequences.
The number of internet addicts is already alarmingly high. It is the responsibility of both the central and state governments to intervene and rehabilitate them before the situation spirals out of control.
By establishing a dedicated unit for treating internet addiction, AIIMS Delhi has taken a crucial first step. Similar centers should be set up in all district headquarters hospitals across the country. The central and state governments must act without delay to expand this initiative and provide necessary support!
